Mary C. Deitle, 102, residing in South Bend, passed away Saturday morning, June 20, 2015 at Wellbrooke of South Bend. She was born August 13, 1912 in Vandalia, MI, at her family’s summer cottage on Birch Lake (the current Camp Tannadoonah), to the late Dr. Ersom and Katherine (Crosby) Cunningham.
 
On April 19, 1941 in St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Cassopolis, MI, Mary married Frank A. Deitle, who preceded her in death on January 12, 1978. She was also preceded by all of her siblings, Katherine Morris, Margaret Darmody, Dorothy O’Neill, Joseph Cunningham, Frances VanAkkeren, and Patricia Johnson McDonnell; son-in-law, Daniel Gorman; and one great grandson, Nicholas Maltarich.
 
Mary is survived by five daughters, Mary (Daniel) Pulaski of South Bend, Fran Hickman of South Bend, Kathleen Gorman of Union, MI, Ann Deitle of South Bend and Michele (Patrick) Dahms of South Bend; her son, Jim (Ann Grover) Deitle of Portland, OR; former daughter-in-law, Jean Johnson of Denver, CO; grandchildren, Kathleen (Mark) Maltarich, Daniel (Liz) Gorman, Ben Gorman, Bridget (Christian) Owens, Frank Deitle, Becky McBride (Mike Turman), Ben (Erin) Deitle Nourse, Katie (Alan) Kitchen, Sam Deitle, Abner Deitle, Adam (Christina) Dahms, Jared (Bridget) Dahms and Courtney Dahms; and great grandchildren, Zuzu Maltarich, Luke Maltarich, Deborah Gorman, Samantha Gorman, Charlie Owens, Meara McBride, Ben McBride Turman, Margaret Nourse and Daphne Dahms. Mary is also survived by several nieces & nephews.
 
In 1930, she began her educational studies at St Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN. She attended the first football game in the new stadium that “Rockne Built”. She continued to be a life long fan of the “Fighting Irish” and would even listen to them on the radio after losing her sight. A proud member of the St. Mary’s College Class of 1934, she attended her 80th reunion last year.
 
She became on elementary teacher and taught school in her hometown of Cassopolis, MI, Benton Harbor, MI (where she met her husband) and later, taught in South Bend at Brown School. Mary enjoyed knitting and owned her own “Studio Knit Shop”, for over 40 years. She also enjoyed china painting, ceramics and several other crafts. Mary was involved with Corvilla and several organizations that helped the blind. She was always looking out for other people. Anyone she would meet she would remember them and be able to recall it years later.
 
Mary loved to travel across the United States, especially in her motorhome. She also visited Alaska, Hawaii and parts of Europe. She loved spending time with her family and she will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.
 
Mary’s family would like to give special thanks for the loving care given to their mother by the staff of Wellbrooke, Harbor Light Hospice staff & volunteers, and mom’s special friend, Eve Mathews.
 
Mary has donated her body to the Indiana University Medical School, Indianapolis, IN. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 920 Wilber St., South Bend, IN 46628.  Graveside services will be held at a later date. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00-7:00 pm Friday, June 26, 2015 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend as well as one hour prior to Mass on Saturday in the church.
 
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to St. Mary’s Scholarship Fund, Development Office, LeMans Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556-5001 or Harbor Light Hospice, 1608 E. Day Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Online condolences may be left for the Deitle family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
