James L. Caldwell

James L. Caldwell, 82, of South Bend, IN passed away at 8:55 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2017 at Hospice House.  He was born on August 17, 1934 in White Earth, MN to the late Ben and Mary (Giard) Caldwell.  On July 14, 1954 in LaPorte, IN, he was united in marriage to the former Annette Griffith.

James is survived by his wife, Annette Caldwell; daughter, Diane (Dan) Merrill of Bremen, IN; son, Randy Caldwell of South Bend, IN; three grandchildren, Stacey Buss, Amanda Shephard and Samantha Kovacevich; nine great grandchildren, and sister, Carol Stegger of St. Paul, MN.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Cheryl Caldwell and Donna Blast; sisters, Shirley, Eunice, Delores and Norma and brothers, Claude and David.

James has lived in South Bend for the last sixty-five years coming from Minnesota.  He was a 1952 graduate of Fosston High School in Fosston, MN.  James worked at Studebaker Corporation and later for AM General retiring in 1996 after twenty-eight years of service.  He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in South Bend and Chain-O-Lakes Conservation Club.

A Memorial graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Southlawn Cemetery, 61300 U.S. 31 South, South Bend, IN.                 Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the cemetery. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel is assisting the family.
