John H. Smith, 79, passed away at 10:25 am Wednesday, November 23, 2016 in Healthwin Nursing and Rehab Center, South Bend. He was born September 11, 1937 in Dublin, GA to the late John and Mary Smith.

John was a truck driver for Southern Pacific Railroad for 44 1/2 years before retiring. He recently moved to the South Bend area to be near his daughter and her family.

John was preceded in death by his son, Owen Smith in 2011. He is survived by his daughter, Joanie L. (Melvin) Carter of Niles, MI; grandchildren, Paige Carter & Angeleah Howard-Smith; and siblings, Annie Maude, Mildred, Viola, Ellen, Annie Bee, Roland Smith, Albert Smith, Marvin Smith, Robert Smith, James Smith and Marshall Smith.

There will be no public services. Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.
