Lester Mary “Mae” Lancaster, 89, residing in South Bend, passed away peacefully at 7:30 pm Tuesday, March 21, 2017. She was born April 5, 1927 in Pinson, TN to the late Rossie and Nola (Shotwell) Thomas.
On June 22, 1944 in Mississippi, Mae married Charles A. Lancaster, who preceded her in death on September 23, 2014 after 70 years of marriage. The Lancasters moved to the South Bend area 65 years ago from Tennessee. Mae enjoyed cooking, gardening and caring for her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she loved unconditionally.
Mae is survived by her children, Wilma Lee, Ray Lancaster, Jessie Lancaster, Richard (Ardean) Lancaster and Charissa Lancaster, all of South Bend; daughters-in-Christ, Debra Ann Barr and Patricia Herron; grandchildren, Eric Lee, Richard Trenell Lancaster, Raymond Lancaster and Jasmine Lancaster; step-grandchildren, Jerome and Shaun Fox, Stephanie Fox and Tommy Hollingsworth; sister, Vergie Trice of Harvey, IL; and a brother-in-law, Wilburn (Diane) Lancaster of Wisconsin; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Mae was preceded in death by a son, Elmer Lancaster; and her three brothers, R.C., Fred and Melvin Thomas.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Brian Jacobs and his staff for the wonderful care given to Mae.
Funeral services for Mae will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, March 25, 2017 in the Palmer Funeral Home - West Chapel, 2702 Lincolnway West, South Bend. Pastor William Jones of the Temple of God Missionary Baptist Church, South Bend, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family for one hour prior to services on Saturday in the funeral home.
