SOUTH BEND – John Wesley Spencer, 89, passed away at 3:02 PM Sunday, September 27, 2015 at Southfield Village Extended Care.  He was born on December 31, 1925 to Lowell and Maybelle Spencer in Danville, IN.

John was a graduate of Mishawaka High School and the Indiana University School of Business.  He was a WW2 veteran and proudly served in General Patton’s Third United States Army in Europe.  John retired as the manager of procurement at the United States Navy Puget Sound Center in Bremerton, WA.  He was a member of VFW Post 360, the Elks Club and in his retirement the Golden Boys Golf Club.

John married Rita Carner on June 19, 1948, and he is survived by their five children.  After Rita’s death, he married Marjorie Knupp on April 15, 2004.  In retirement, John enjoyed wintering in Arizona with Marjorie, reading, golf, and spending time with his family.  John was a kind, hardworking, loving husband and father.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, four daughters, Priscilla (Gary) Weaver of South Bend, Linda Daniels of Granger, Katherine (Kent) Cooper of Buchanan, MI, Mary (Gill) Morrison of Green Valley, AZ, and one son, John (Pamela) Spencer, Jr. of Brecksville, OH, three grandchildren, John Reed, Lisa (Manny) Lopez, Wendy Beck, and six great grandchildren.  John is also survived by his brother, Thomas (Dee) Spencer of West Lafayette, IN.  Another brother, Lowell Spencer of Morristown, IN, preceded him in death. 

The family thanks the staff of Southfield and Karen from Hospice for their compassionate care of John. 

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend, IN.  Chaplain Deb Hewitt will officiate.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may visit with family two hours prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
