Welcome to the memorial page for

Christopher Dee McCarty

June 5, 1945 ~ July 21, 2016 (age 71) 71 Years Old
Christopher Dee McCarty, age 71, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 21, 2016 in the comfort of his own home in South Bend, IN. He is survived by his loving wife, Nola McCarty; his son, Jeff McCarty (Teri); his daughter, Kimberly Katzen (Steve); and his three beautiful granddaughters, Kourtany (16), Ashlyn (13) and Leila (9).

Chris was born June 5th, 1945 in South Bend, IN to his parents, Charles C. and Marguerite (Bare) McCarty, who preceded him in death along with his brothers, Daniel and Michael. He is survived by his siblings, Bill, Pam, John, Debbie and Margaret.

Chris grew up at Hudson Lake in New Carlisle, IN, and as a young man, joined the U.S. Navy, where he was a quartermaster on the U.S.S. Bennington, an aircraft carrier in the North Pacific, serving in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1966 and married Nola Mae Waschke on September 17, 1966. They moved for a time to Los Angeles, CA, where Chris studied architecture at Pierce College.

In 1971, Chris and Nola moved to Chicago, where they had two children. They lived in the southside town of Evergreen Park, and Chris worked as a journeyman maintenance mechanic at UPS. He was renowned at being able to fix almost any kind of machine or device.

After his children were grown and in college, Chris and Nola moved back to the South Bend area, where the two of them ran a gift shop in Mishawaka for over ten years. Chris was also an accomplished craftsman, especially in woodwork, and made many of the items he sold with his wife in their store.

Chris loved lake culture and especially loved fishing, but also loved watching movies, singing Frank Sinatra songs (he had a wonderful voice), telling jokes, his puppies (Patches, Callie and Corkie), his Christian faith, and above all, his wife and children.

Funeral services and military honors for Chris will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, July 25, 2016 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Rev.
