George Joseph May, Sr.

George Joseph May, Sr., 74, of South Bend, IN passed away at 2:03 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.  He was born on May 8, 1940, in South Bend to the late Frank and Vera (Phillips) May.  On October 27, 1962, in Roseland, IN, George married Nancy Lou (Stielow-Huenerkopf) May, who survives.

George is survived by his wife, Nancy; a daughter, Connie Ann (Paul) Holston; a son, George Joseph May, Jr., all of South Bend; three grandchildren, Scott May, Valerie Holston and Brittany Holston; and six great-grandchildren, Zachary May, Trinity Stewart, Brooklynne Stackman, Marilyn Stewart, Aingeal May and McKenzie May.  George is also survived by two sisters, Mary Navarro and Rita May, both of South Bend; five brothers, Mike (Jean) May of South Bend, Earl “Sonny” (Helen) May of Florida, John May of South Bend, Frank May of Texas and Bill May of South Bend and several nieces and nephews.  George was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Albert May and Donald May. 

George was a Groundskeeper at Indian Springs and Portage Place for 22 years.  He was employed at Redi Froz for ten years, Stockards Flying Service for 10 years and Izaak Walton League for two years.

Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, with a Words of Remembrance Service to follow at 1:00 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street; South Bend, IN 46614.  Burial will take place at Highland Cemetery, 2257 Portage Ave, South Bend, IN 46616. 

George loved to spend time camping with his family and friends, traveled to 48 of the United States, and was also the owner of an extensive Coca Cola collection.
