Larry Allen Grenert

October 13, 1947 – March 19, 2017

South Bend – Larry A. Grenert, 69, of South Bend, IN passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 3:56 pm surrounded by his immediate family at Memorial Hospital.  Larry was born on October 13, 1947 to Catherine Fern (Grenert) Doerr in Terre Haute, IN.  He then went with his mother to live on the Grenert Farm in Lakeville where his grandparents resided.  His mother married Paul F. Doerr when Larry was 6 years old and they moved and resided in South Bend.

Larry was preceded in death by his grandparents, mom, dad and many aunts and uncles.  Larry is survived by his two children, Adam (Danielle) and Amber Grenert; former wife, Carol Grenert; and three grandchildren, Michalynn Grenert, Torren and Trusten Vest.  He is also survived by his brother, Gary Doerr and his sister, Paula Doerr along with her three sons, Jarrod, Jason and Justin Coultas.  He is survived by many cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and extended family.

Larry was first and foremost an amazing father, grandfather, son, brother, husband, friend, uncle and nephew.

He loved many things in life, especially adventure.  Larry loved to travel, bowl, watch and coach sports, swim – he was known for his cannon balls, ride his motorcycle years ago, go to the casino, go out to eat with his family regularly, camp, be the funny guy, loved giving to others and also loved his morning breakfast at his “regular” diners.

He was the kindest soul with the biggest heart to any and every one that crossed his path.  The most generous man you could ever meet.

Larry was a proud Marine who fought hard for our country in the Vietnam War. From his dedication, he contracted Agent Orange causing him many health issues, ultimately leading to his passing.

Larry was employed and retired after 25 years with AM General.  Everyone knew him as “Bear” at the plant and if you said Larry they didn’t know who you were referring to.

Larry was very loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at First Brethren Church, 4909 S. Ironwood, South Bend, IN 46614.  Rev. Fred Youngen, pastor of the church, will officiate. Friends may gather one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Contributions in memory of Larry may be offered to First Brethren Church or Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL  32256
