Phyllis M. Himes

November 10, 1924 ~ February 7, 2016 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Phyllis M. Grover Himes, 91, of Osceola, IN passed away at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Morningside Memory Care.  She was born on November 10, 1924 in Bisbee, ND to the late Harold and Inga (Johnson) Ettline.  On February 23, 1947 in Mishawaka, IN, she married Alfred C. Grover who preceded her in death in 1978.  On August 13, 1983 in Mishawaka, IN, she married Victor E. Himes who preceded her in death in 1985.

Phyllis is survived by her three grandsons, Michael (Lula) Adkins of South Bend, IN, Terry (Jeanette) Adkins of South Bend, IN and Patrick (Jodi) Adkins of Osceola, IN; seven great grandchildren, Chris (Chasity) Adkins, Brandon Adkins, Brittany Adkins (Fiance Austin Davis), Heather (D.J.) Wroblewski, Patrick Adkins, Parker Adkins and Payton Adkins and eight great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Mike Adkins and two brothers, Dean and Harold Ettline.

Phyllis lived most of her life in South Bend, IN.  She served her country in the United States Navy as a member of the Blue Waves during WWII. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society.  Phyllis was better known as “Granny” to friends and loved ones.  Any neighbor, friend, or colleague that knew her, knew her as Granny.  This began back in the mid-eighties, when she would ride the Bethel Bus to her grandson’s basketball games.  She became everyone’s granny.

Until her health and mobility declined about a year ago, Granny was able to live her last 15 years with her grandson Pat.  She enjoyed being around the great grandchildren and all the friends they brought to the house.

A private family service will be held and burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka, IN.  Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend is assisting the family.  We would like to invite any friends who would like to greet the family and share in her celebration of life to stop by the home of her grandson, Pat Adkins, from 3:30-6:30, Thursday, February 11.

The family would like to thank Morningview, Morningside, and Hospice for their help and care.

Contributions in memory of Phyllis M. Himes may be offered to Pet Refuge, 4626 S. Burnett Drive, South Bend, IN 46614.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com
