Rev. James H. Murphy

Rev. James H. Murphy, 85, residing in Wakarusa, IN, formerly of South Bend, passed away at 3:03 a.m into the loving arms of Jesus on
Saturday, January 7, 2012.  He was born August 25, 1926 in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, a son of Russell Earl & Mabel (Thompson) Murphy.  He grew up in Collinsville, Oklahoma.  He proudly served his country during the Korean War, in the United States Army-Air Force, and in the National Guard.  He was a cartoonist for the Tulsa World Newspaper, and became a sign painter during the war.  He entered into the ministry and pastored in Rochester, IN before moving to South Bend in the late 1950's.  He served as Associate Pastor at Christian Center for more than forty years, under the leadership of Dr. Lester Sumrall.  Over the years, he also ministered in various countries specifically Israel,Hong Kong, Vietnam, the Philippines and Brazil.  He also served as a co-host on a daily TV progam with Dr. Sumrall for many years.  For many years Brother Murphy minister every Tuesday night in Noblesville, IN at WHMB-40.
 
On May 24, 1952 at the Assembly of God, Rochester, IN, he was united in marriage to Leona Ruth Sumrall (sister of Dr. Lester Sumrall). She passed away on February 7, 1990. He was also preceded in death by a sister, June, and a brother, Jack.  He is survived by his brother, Joe (Carla) Murphy of Tulsa, OK and three nephews, Rev. Frank (Karen) Sumrall of Port Orange, FL, Rev. Stephen (Diane) Sumrall of  St. Joseph, Michigan, and Peter Sumrall of South BendAlso surviving are eleven great-nieces and nephews, and eleven great-great nieces and nephews.
 
Services celebrating the life of Brother James Murphy will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2012 at Christian Center,  530 East Ireland Road, South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from noon until service time Monday at the Church.
