Susan R. Carter

Susan R. Carter, 77, of Mishawaka, IN passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Sprenger Healthcare of Mishawaka.   She was born on July 13, 1940 in Fremont, OH to the late Clyde and Ruth J. (Ringle) Widell. 

Susan is survived by her children, Brent A. Heckman of Lakeville, IN, Teri S. Heckman and Traci A. Heckman, both of South Bend, IN; four grandchildren, Trisha Mitchell, Jacqueline Heckman, Bryan Heckman and Courtney Chhouy; eight great grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Howe of Hopkins, SC, Penny Hooper of Symra, NC, Katie Weaver of FL, Lyndora McCune of Waverly, OH, Diane Lance and Patricia Boatman, both of Fremont, OH; brothers, Steven Tittle of British Columbia, and Raymond Stewart Tittle of Tiffin, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.   She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde (Adeline) Tittle and Ruth J. (George) Widell; daughter, Tami L. Heckman; son, Brian D. Heckman; great grandchild, Alyanna Chhouy and three brothers, Barton Eaton, Milton J. and Grant D. Tittle.

Susan moved to South Bend in 1963.  Although raising her children she worked various part-time jobs and was active in substitute teaching as well a PTA Leader at the elementary school her children attended.  In 1970 she started working for the St. Joseph County Court House, and had programmed the computer system for the courts before leaving in 1981, when she moved to Richland, WA. She later moved to Erie, IL.  She returned to South Bend in 1987 starting a chapter for Parents of Murdered Children taking it to the Prosecutors Office.  She originated the State of Indiana Survivors of Homicide-South Bend Chapter, where she was recognized and honored with several plaques and awards.  When her term ended, Susan went to work at the St. Joseph County-City Building in Voter Registration until she retired.  .

The family would like to personally thank Sprenger Healthcare and Heartland Hospice for their excellent care.  Susan enjoyed reading, baking, bowling, and playing cards.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend.   Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 16, 2017 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel.  Graveside services and burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, South Bend.
